What is a district court?

District Courts are the principal civil courts at the district level in India. Each district has a District Court presided over by a District Judge. District Courts handle civil suits, criminal cases, family matters, property disputes, and appeals from lower courts (Munsiff Courts, Judicial Magistrate Courts etc.).

Cases at the district court level form the vast majority of all pending litigation in India — over 3 crore cases are pending across district and subordinate courts. Sarth enables instant case tracking at all digitised district courts through the eCourts integration.

💡
Tip: Use the CNR (Case Number Record) number for the most accurate district court search. CNR numbers are unique 16-character identifiers printed on all court notices.
